Employees react to ambulance service change

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Ambulance service in Chatham County is forever changed. On Tuesday, Southside Fire officially took over for Medstar.

WTOC rode along with a crew from the downtown station. They are still using the Medstar trucks and they're equipped with the same equipment and medicine as of now.

Employees say the biggest change at this point is the patch on their arm.

And despite all the emotion expressed since the change was announced, the downtown crew was relatively optimistic.

"It's the same people. It might be a different uniform, but it's the same professionalism between the two companies," Sergeant Eric Boystak said.

The deal has been in the works for quite a while after Memorial lost a bid to Southside Fire.

Officials say 86 Medstar employees have been hired by Southside and the chief says things are going smoothly.

"We will give them just as high a level of service today as they received yesterday," Chief Meadows said.

More changes are expected in the coming days and weeks like different protocol for patient treatment and different medicine on the ambulances.
