Brunswick woman to join Red Cross Iraq duties

BRUNSWICK, GA (WTOC) – A Brunswick woman is heading to Baghdad with the American Red Cross to support the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who are serving in Iraq.

Hannah Young will be in Iraq for five months. Young will staff an American Red Cross office that plays a critical role as an emergency communication conduit between military members and their families in the U.S., according to the Red Cross.

Red Cross workers typically deliver emergency messages, help keep up morale by maintaining a 24-hour canteen service, and offer free Internet access, movie and book lending library, toiletries and homemade bread.

The Service to the Armed Forces programs of the American Red Cross offer service to military families; service to military and veterans hospitals; emergency communication services.

Now in times of modern conflict, as in past decades of war and peace, the Red Cross carries out its mission "to provide humanitarian support to service members, veterans and their families, around the clock and around the globe."
