Liberty County is home to Fort Stewart and the Third Infantry Division, and people there say they want to show their appreciation for our troops. Last night, they held a special community-wide memorial service at Olvey Field in Hinesville to honor veterans of the current and past wars, as well as those soldiers who paid the ultimate price for freedom.
A community choir led the group in songs of praise and patriotism. They also took a moment to read the names of Third ID soldiers who lost their lives in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and remembered them with a moment of silence.
"A lot of the heartbeat with our community really rests with the fact that we have the military here," said Pastor Phillip Byler of Bethesday Church. "If they were not here, the total nature and flavor would change significantly. So it's important in my mind."
WTOC's own Sonny Dixon served as the speaker for the ceremony.
