High School evacuated after suspicious package found

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - South Effingham High School has been evacuated after a suspicious package was found inside the building.

Staff and faculty have been evacuated to South Effingham Middle School.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation bomb squad are going to be sending a robot into the building to retrieve the package. Chatham County K-9 units are on standby.

No injuries have been reported. This is an ongoing investigation which is being conducted by the Effingham County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division, according to the Effingham County Sheriff's Office.

Statement from Principal Dr. Mark K. Winters:

This is Dr. Winters from South Effingham High School. We noticed a suspicious item in a classroom this morning. We have evacuated all students and staff members to South Effingham Middle School. All students and staff are safe in the middle school. The Effingham County Sheriff's Department along with the Chatham County Bomb Squad are on the high school campus. We are taking every precaution to ensure that the building is safe before we resume normal activities. Please help us minimize the traffic at the school by not coming to the school. Your children are safe at the middle school. I will give you further updates as I have them. Thank you for your cooperation.
