SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Armstrong Atlantic State University has named Michael Smoose as the interim athletic director until a new athletic director is named.
AASU officials dismissed the former athletic director, Andy Carter, on Feb. 1.
"I am thankful to President Dr. Linda Bleicken and the Armstrong Atlantic State University administration for having the confidence in my abilities to help direct the Pirate athletic department through this transition," Smoose told AASU.
Smoose has been serving as the assistant to the athletics director for internal operations since Aug. 2009. He is responsible for handling facilities, day-to-day business matters for the department and acts as a liaison with university administration.
Smoose came from the Florida State University athletic department where he was a graduate assistant in the sports information office and then as an assistant sport information director. He has served in other sports information roles at Fresno State University, Nothern Illinois University and Ohio Unversity. Smoose is from Brooksville, PA and holds a master's of business administration from Florida State University and a bachelor's in sports sciences from Ohio University. He is married to Melissa Batie with one daughter, Madison.
AASU is forming a committee to oversee the search for a new athletic director.
