SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A 1 year old is in the hospital after police say she suffered a blow to the head and bruises all over her body.

Her mother is a soldier on base and left the baby with her boyfriend.

Michael Carlton is now charged with hurting the little girl. He faces a charge of cruelty to children.

Police say he denied it at first and told them the 1 year old was hitting herself in her crib.

When she got to Memorial on Wednesday police say the one year old had a bleeding brain and bruises on her chest, stomach, legs, cheeks, and a black eye.

The girl's father, Stephen Lisowsky, lives in Florida but rushed to Savannah to see his daughter. He can't believe anyone would hurt her this way.

"He is lucky I didn't get to him. That is just not something you do. You don't take it out on someone who is innocent…someone like Sierra who can't defend themselves. She didn't even know what was going on. She is just a baby," Lisowsky said.

Lisowsky says doctors say the swelling has gone down, but the one year old is still not eating or drinking. He says doctors told him they suspect the baby was thrown head first onto the ground.

Lisowsky says the 1 year old is breathing on her own and he says at this point doctors don't think she suffered brain damage.
