BULLOCH CO, GA (WTOC) – A man was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated battery.
The Screven County Sheriff's Office got a call Sunday on a vehicle on the Ogeechee River Bridge at State Road 24 on the Bulloch-Screven County line.
A deputy found a white male with severe facial trauma in a 1984 Ford Ranger parked on the bridge. Screven County EMS was called to the scene and took the victim, Marvin Carlton King, 49, of Statesboro, to East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro for treatment, according to the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office.
King told deputies that he had been beaten earlier that night in Bulloch County.
Deputies and investigators processed the Ford Ranger for physical evidence. They were able to get a statement from King about whose house he had been at when the assault occurred, according to the sheriff's office.
King was then airlifted to Memorial Medical Center's Trauma Unit in Savannah for treatment for a brain injury, several broken bones and a collapsed lung.
Deputies went to Dyches Road, where the assault occurred, which was a short distance from where King was found. Deputies searched the residence. Physical evidence and several witnesses found at the location were able to give deputies details about King's assault.
King was at a Superbowl party until he was accused of making unwanted advances toward a woman at the party, according to the sheriff's office. The woman's boyfriend, Landon Lee Sowell, became angry over the incident and physically struck and kicked King until restrained by other partygoers, according to the sheriff's office.
No one called the sheriff's office or EMS for assistance during or after the assault.
Sowell was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated battery, a felony. He is currently being held at the Bulloch County Jail without bond.
King is in critical condition.
