SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The top spellers from elementary and middle schools around Chatham County faced off Monday at The Savannah Arts Academy.
Words likes pseudo, aurora, even February were just a taste of what the talented spellers were put to test with.
After it was all said and done Maylashia Jones from Derenne Middle School finished third, Natreece Brooks from Marshpoint Elementary finished second and 2011's champion was Alyssa Skarin from Garrison Elementary, who won by spelling the word brogan.
"It really exercises our minds. In this day and time of technology where we can spell check everything on the computer, it is refreshing to know that we have kids who really know words, understand words, and study words," said Mary Snowden, president of The Chatham Association of Education.
The winners will each get cash prizes and will move onto the district spelling bee in Waycross.
WTOC's very own Sonny Dixon served as the moderator for Monday night's contest.
