SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah crews responded to a sewage spill Thursday at 1 Resort Drive on Hutchinson Island.
A grease blockage in the city sewer main at the resort area caused a surcharge in the gravity sewer main that caused a manhole to overflow, according to a city of Savannah news release. An estimated 2,760 gallons of sewage discharged into the marsh and wetlands on Savannah Harbor Parkway and the storm drainage system to Savannah River.
This amount classifies as a minor spill under Environmental Protection Division guidelines.
City Water and Sewer crews were notified of the spill at 11:40 a.m. and the spill was corrected at 1:12 p.m.
The sewer main blockage was cleared and removed, the main was jetted and cleaned and the potential sources in the area that caused the blockage will be addressed, the release said.
State law requires the public be notified of all sewer spills.
