SAVANNAH, Ga. - The defending DII national champion Southern Indiana baseball squad scored twice in the top of the 12th inning to edge host Armstrong Atlantic State University, 6-4, on Friday afternoon at Pirate Field.
The top-ranked Screaming Eagles (1-0) scored first in the contest as Adam Enright drilled a two-out single, scoring Michael Huling in the top of the first. Armstrong (1-2) answered in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Josh Purvis, tying the score at 1-1.
The Pirates' Drew Walker gave Armstrong its first lead of the game with a solo home run off of Southern Indiana starter Trevor Leach in the second inning, then an RBI fielder's choice by Lawrence Jackson in the fourth put the Pirates up, 3-1.
Southern Indiana would reclaim the lead in the sixth with a three-run rally, capped by a two-run double by Jarrod Rose, making the score 4-3. Armstrong's Michael Price would tie the game on an RBI infield single in the seventh, eventually sending the game to extra innings.
In the top of the 12th, Brad Vance would drive in a pair with a bases-loaded single to left, then Tyler Choate (1-0) would put down the Pirates in the bottom of the 12th to claim the win. Choate hurled six innings of six-hit, one-run ball, walking two and striking out six in relief to claim the win for the Screaming Eagles.
Armstrong reliever Trent Landa (0-1) gave up four hits and two runs in 2 1/3 innings, walking three and striking out two to take the loss for the Pirates.
Vance went 3-for-6 with the two RBIs to lead the Screaming Eagles at the plate as Huling, Justin Blinn and Enright all had two hits apiece.
Drew Walker, Josh Heath, Chris Zittrouer and Purvis each collected two hits for the Pirates.
Armstrong and Southern Indiana play game two of their three-game series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Pirate Field.
