SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A child was caught up in a drive-by shooting and crash at about 1 a.m. on Tuesday. He was cut up by broken glass and beat up from bouncing around in the car when it crashed.
According to the child's mother 9-year-old Shyree Smalls was riding with his stepfather, 19-year-old Rashamelle Coleman, when someone opened fire on the car. Coleman took off, but crashed into several park cars in Yamacraw Village. One of those cars belonged to Saundra Gravely. "My main concern wasn't the car. It's the baby," said Gravely.
Gravely knows the young boy, he plays with her son. "He's petite. Shyree is a little guy and my son is like the big sumo."
Gravely says his size could have saved his life. "I saw the bullet holes through the headrest of the car and I know that if Shyree was just a little bigger it wouldn't have missed him," said Gravely.
A thought that chokes her up. "I'm a mom and it's kind of hard to live in a neighborhood when you're a mom and I don't want to let them outside"
It's incidents like this she says makes her afraid for her son's safety.
Smalls mother says her son is doing fine and only had minor injuries.
At this time police do not know why someone targeted Coleman. If you have any information about the shooting you're asked to call CrimeStoppers at 912.234.2020.
