SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Savannah-Chatham School District is getting ready to tear down the old Hodge Elementary School.
Preparations are being made for a demolition ceremony on Thursday at the school. The school has a rich history with generations of families have attended the school over the last 54 years. Teachers and parents have fought to keep the school in the neighborhood which is now just down the street from the old DeRenne Middle School building.
"Hodge is one of our neighborhood schools. It's a school where kids of kids of kids have gone there and we want to honor that and honor the community as well and say thank you to that community for their support," said SCCPS Operations Officer Otis Brock.
"There's progress here. Hodge is being torn down so Beach can expand even though there are sentimental feelings about Hodge we have to look at the progress of Beach expanding there," said Irene Hines, school board member district 5.
Once the old building is demolished, construction crews will begin building the new Beach High School project which was approved through E-SPLOST funds.
