BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) - After months of uncertainty, Shell Point Elementary School in northern Beaufort County will remain open next year. The Beaufort County School Board voted six to four in favor of keeping their schools open for the 2011-2012 school year.
The board was considering closing the school to make up for the $6.8 million shortfall. Shell Point Elementary School parents have been fighting to keep the school open since they found out in November.
"We are just escatic that they have finally put it to rest for the 2011-2012 school year. We know that we are going to be safe. The teachers can relax a little bit and breathe easier. The parents can breathe easier. The kids can not have to worry about makign up fundraisers and car washes to raise money to save their school," said Shell Point President Cathy Emmert.
School Board members will hold a budget workshop on Friday to figure out how to make up for the budget shortfall.
