SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A ceremony took place Thursday morning to mark the demolition of the Sarah Mills Hodge Elementary School.
Parents, teachers and alumni fought to keep the school in the neighborhood. The building is being demolished to make way for the construction of the new Beach High School. A canopy will be brought down to signify the start of the demolition process.
The canopy was chosen for safety reasons, as demolition of any other part of the building holds various safety hazards, according to the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System.
The new Hodge Elementary School is now just down the street in the old Derenne Middle School building.
