BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WTOC) - A grand jury indicted Preston Oates in connection with the Dec. 24 shooting death of 34-year-old Carlos Olivera.
Tow truck driver Preston Oates is accused of shooting Olivera on Live Oak Walk Drive in the Edgefield neighborhoodin Bluffton.
Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner said Olivera and Oates disagreed over whether Olivera had properly parked his minivan. Olivera was shot and killed after getting into an argument with Oates.
Oates told police the shooting was self defense. He said he felt threatened by a couple of men. Police said they found 10 shell casings. He was also indicted for possession of a firearm during commission of a violent crime.
Police said that more than two years ago Oates was charged with assault with intent to kill, but the charges were dropped.
Oates remains in the Beaufort County Detention Center.
