Fort Pulaski celebrates African-American Heritage

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Many people came out to celebrate the African-American Heritage at Fort Pulaski on Sunday in honor of Black History month.

Re-enactors dressed as soldiers from the 1st South Carolina Regiment, which was trained on Hilton Head Island.

The group gave guided tours of the fort and showed visitors what types of weapons these soldiers would use and much more.

"Having ancestory that were slaves, that were maybe a part of something that happened here, or near by, it means a lot to me just to be here and be able to help celebrate my culture and my heritage", said re-enactor Matthew Holmes.

Re-enactors said there were slaves who lived at the fort and raised children there. They worked and died to make sure Fort Pulaski remained stable during the war.
