HARDEEVILLE, SC (WTOC) - Twenty-one gallon bottles of muraitic acid fell off a vehicle on Highway 278 east bound near the entrance of Traditions.

Several of the bottle ruptured and created a vapor cloud. Hardeeville Fire and Rescue called DHEC and Hilton Head Island/Bluffton Hazmat Team to help them contain and clean.

The spill happened at about 7:30 a.m. Monday and just before 10:30 a.m., the road was opened.

"Several of the bottles had ruptured. Muraitic acid in its diluted form is used to balance the ph in pools. It's also used to clean and edge masony work," said Chief Dan Morgan of the Hardeeville Fire Dept.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control was also called in to assist with the clean up.
