Ceremony to mark contract for new jail extension

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) – A signing ceremony will take place Thursday for the new extension to the Chatham County Detention Center.

The contract between Chatham County and Hunt/Mills Construction will be signed at a ceremony in Chairman Pete Liakakis' office at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

The contract is for $70,734,000 and is part of the voter approved 2007–2014 SPOLST, according to the county. The project is expected to take two and a half years to complete. It will add 1,136 new beds to the Detention Center.

Sheriff Al St Lawrence and Jail Administrator McArthur Holmes and County Manager Russ Abolt are also expected to attend the signing ceremony. Representatives of Hunt/Mills who will be attending include Vice President  Matt Barnes, Contract Manager DJ McGlothern, Construction Manager Michael Savidakis and W.G. Mills Vice President Joe Frisco.

The ground breaking ceremony will take place within the next few weeks, according to the county.
