SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Boys and Girls Club is a safe place for children to grow and learn and volunteers are an important part of completing that mission. The Frank Callen Boys and Girls Club on E. Charlton Street has a pool of volunteers but one is standing out.
Coach Michael Hamilton has volunteered his time there for 14 years; using his love for sports to make a connection with the kids of the Boys and Girls Club in hopes of keeping them on a successful path.
"Watching these kids, how we are losing our young kids, our kids are getting caught up in so many different things in life and getting in trouble, so I figured I can be a big help. I know I am a big help to these kids. I am a big role model," Coach Hamilton told WTOC.
It's a role he accidentally fell into, but once realizing the need for positive figures, it's a role he is happy to fill.
"At first I was just doing it to have fun and pass time away and then I realized how serious it was and how much the kids really enjoy being around me and I got a group of my friends and brought them with me and we are doing some good things here," he said.
For doing good things with children and sacrificing his time Coach Mike is a WTOC Hometown Hero.
