CHATHAM COUNTY, GA (WTOC) - Chatham County leaders, including sheriff Al St Lawrence, Chatham County Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis and County Manager Russ Abolt signed the jail extension contract Thursday afternoon.
The $71 million contract was awarded to Hunt-Mills. Voters approved the funds through SPLOST.
"We're doing it right and we're doing it to where down the road somewhere beyond my time they can add to it and don't have to go through all of it again," said Sheriff St Lawrence.
The ground breaking for the project will take place within the next few weeks and should take two and a half years to complete.
