Time to Make a Decision for DaimlerChrysler

The state of Georgia has set a deadline for DaimlerChrysler. State officials say if the auto maker does not decide to build in Pooler by the end of the year, the proposed site could be used for another project. For the last several months, DaimlerChrysler has delayed it's decision.

Glenn Cornell, the Commissioner of the State Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism, has written Daimler Chrysler saying that Georgia will begin looking for someone else to use the state-owned property in Pooler. Cornell said yesterday that the letter was not an attempt to force an issue but was only a status report on the state's progress in preparing the site. He said Georgia has already spent $60 million in improvements on the 1,500 acre site.

Last month, DaimlerChrysler's board delayed any decision on the $750 million project. Local officials estimate an auto plant could provide 33-hundred jobs and several thousand support jobs throughout the community.
