PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) - The Port Wentworth post office has officially closed its doors.

As of 4:30 p.m. Monday customers will have to travel to post office in Garden City, next to the Piggly Wiggly on Augusta Avenue to get service.

On the last day of service the Port Wentworth post office was nearly deserted, just a rare customer here and there.

"I really didn't like it too much, now we have to go to Garden City, Pooler, or whichever way we are going," said Richard Sanders. "It's not convenient anymore."

The U.S. Postal Service announced earlier this month that the Port Wentworth Post Office is closing, because it does not generate enough revenue.

"I guess it's because this is one of the smaller ones around and the other ones were bigger and better locations," said Sanders. "I guess it was easier to shut this one down."

A letter on the door of the post office instructed customers that they will now have to travel to Garden City for service

"It's not that busy, still it's convenient for the people out here instead of sending them through town to the post office," said Tiffany Williams.

In Garden City, postal workers were busy installing more boxes in anticipation of the closure.

"I see where they put in more boxes," said Burnard Exley.

He has dropped of his mail at Garden City for nearly 30 years and says he has never had to wait long, but that may soon change.

"I don't know how the volume is there. I am sure it will increase load," said Exley.

Sanders says it's a major inconvenience the residents of Port Wentworth will have to deal with.

"It's alot more aggravating and you have to go out of your way to mail a letter or get package," said Sanders, because this last letter he will be able to send out from Port Wentworth.

The Port Wentworth postal workers have been reassigned to other locations.
