HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - The Heritage Golf Tournament is right around the corner and Monday was the annual Media Day at Sea Pines. Unfortunately, there were no big announcements on the search for a title sponsor.
Typically, Media Day is an upbeat event on the upcoming tournament in April and a chance for media representatives to enjoy the golf course. However, the mood seemed a little different.
With just weeks before the Heritage, the pressure is on to fund a title sponsor. Tournament Director Steve Wilmont says they are continuing to work closely with the PGA to secure a title sponsor for the event. It's a position no one thought the tournament would still be in after long-time sponsor Verizon pulled out last year.
This year's tournament dates have been moved to a week later than usual and there was a concern if the tournament would even on the PGA calendar.
Thanks to support from Hilton Head Island and the county, the tournament will go on for April.
Wilmont says it's really important they showcase the tournament this year to secure a new sponsor.
