Cell phone collection drive under way

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Donations are being accepted for used cell phones for the Cell Phones for Soldiers program.

Cell Phones for Soldiers aims to collect more than 1 million cell phones this year to help keep military service men and women connected with their families.

EMC Engineering Services Inc. will have a booth in front of the building located at 23 E. Charlton St. on St. Patrick's Day. Those who donate cell phones at the booth on St. Patrick's Day will receive a ticket for admittance to use the facilities at our downtown location during the St. Patrick's Day festivities.

Phones can also be dropped off at these locations: #23 E. Charlton St. in Savannah; 1 Wiley Bottom Road at the Landings; 1211 Merchant Way, Suite 201 in Statesboro; 664 Scranton Rd., Suite 201 in Brunswick.

Donated phones are sent ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each phone and the money is used to purchase prepaid calling cards which are sent to the troops, according to Cell Phones for Soldiers. About half of the phones ReCellular processes are reconditioned and resold to wholesale companies in more than 40 countries worldwide.
