Ten Commandments Monument Removed

(Montgomery, Alabama-AP) -- A controversial Ten Commandments monument has been removed from the Alabama Judicial Building's rotunda.

The 5,300 pound monument was wheeled out of public view in accordance with a federal court order.

The Christian Defense Coalition's director says he was told the monument would be moved to another location within the building.

Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore put the monument in place two years ago. A federal judge ruled last year it was unconstitutional and ordered Moore to remove it. Moore refused, and was suspended on ethics charges after eight other state justices voted to remove the monument.

A hearing that was to be held in federal court later today on a lawsuit to keep the monument in place has been canceled.

Monument supporters who had been camped out around the building knelt in prayer as it was removed. Dozens have now laid their bodies flat on the building's steps.
