CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) – The Chatham County Sheriff's Office hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for the Detention Center Expansion Project.
The ceremony was held at 10:30 a.m. Chatham County Sheriff Al St Lawrence, Chatham County Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis, Board of Commissioners and construction contractors attended the event.
"A lot of infrastructure work has to be done. We are not building a box car, we are budiling a prison, a jail with new security systems. And we have been waiting for this day to come and have been working on this since December 2004," said Sheriff Al St Lawrence.
The nearly $71 million construction project will nearly double the size of the facility and will take more than two and a half years to complete.
The new facility will add an additional 1,136 beds and be nearly 400,000 square feet.
