Savannah Red Cross standing by to offer assistance

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami struck the coast of Japan on Friday. While information is limited, the Savannah Chapter of the American Red Cross reports that neither the Japanese Red Cross or any other national society has issued an appeal for international assistance.

The Savannah Chapter of the American Red Cross is standing by.

"Reports form our National Headquarters state that the American Red Cross is standing by and ready to respond as needed," said Savannah chapter American Red Coss Public Support Coordinator Mary Beth McLeod in news release.

So far, 28 deaths have been reported. A tsunami warning for Guam, Hawii, Northen Mariana Islands and the entire Pacific Coast has been issued.

The American Red Cross is continuing to monitor the situation.
