Truck driver dies in Highway 17 accident

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – The South Carolina Highway Patrol reports that the driver of the cement pump truck that hit the Back River Bridge has died. The accident happened around noon.

Numerous authorities and emergency personel responded, including the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Savannah Fire and HAZMAT, Savannah-Chatham Metro Police, Chatham County Sheriff's deputies, the Levy Fire Department, Jasper County Sheriff's Department, Jasper County Fire/Rescue and LifeStar.

The cement pump truck knocked out sections of the concrete guards on the bridge. The cab of the truck was left hanging over the side of the bridge.

Both lanes of Highway 17 over the Talmadge Bridge and Back River Bridge has reopened.
