BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) – Two people were injured Thursday when an SUV and minivan collided on Highway 278.
Bluffton police responded at about 11:40 a.m. to a two-vehicle collision on eastbound Highway between Buck Island Road and Rose Hill Plantation.
Cesare C. Gualdoni, 75, of Bluffton, attempted to make a right turn onto Highway 278 in his white Chevrolet SUV, according to police. He failed to yield right of way to a silver Toyota minivan traveling in the slow lane, and his SUV clipped the minivan, according to police. The Toyota flipped onto its roof.
The minivan driver had severe injuries and was flown by helicopter to Memorial University Medical Center. The minivan passenger was also injured and was transported by Beaufort County Emergency Medical Services to Hilton Head Hospital. Both of their conditions are unknown at this time. Their identities are being withheld until more information is known.
Gualdoni was cited for failure to yield right of way. Highway 278 was closed in both directions for approximately 30 minutes so the
helicopter could land on the highway. Eastbound was closed for 30 more minutes until the vehicles were removed from the roadway.
