SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – The bridge leading to Lake Mayer will be replaced with a causeway using structural fill material, according to the Chatham County Commission.
The decision was made to replace the bridge because of structural damage to the bridge and the cost and time to build a new bridge before several events that are scheduled at the park, according to the commission.
Construction of a causeway is far less expensive than a new bridge and can open the island up to vehicular access much earlier.
Public Works staff start removing the failed bridge and constructing a causeway on March 21. Once construction begins, there will be no access to the island until at least March 31, according to the county commission.
