CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) – Work on the Back River Bridge was rescheduled for Friday due to heavy St. Patrick's Day traffic.
Work is under way from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Monday, weather permitting on U.S. 17 at the bridge approaching the Talmadge Memorial Bridge, according to the Georgia Dept. of Transportation. The bridge was damaged when a truck overturned in a fatal crash and took out a section of the guardrail.
The DOT will reconstruct the guard rail, catwalk, and curb and make need repairs to the bridge. During this time, crews will be installing a single southbound lane closure on U.S. 17 at the Back River Bridge.
Georgia DOT crews will lead both north and southbound motorists through this construction work zone with a pilot vehicle while the southbound U.S. 17 lane closure is in place, according to the DOT.
