HUTCHINSON ISLAND, GA (WTOC) - Chatham County commissioners discussed the budget and ways to reduce spending cost on Thursday.
The tax digest is estimated to be at least 5 percent less than last year, which forced the county to assess projects and funding for several departments, including recreation, county narcotics team and finance.
But public safety was the one department at the forefront of discussion.
"Public safety is our No. 1 project. That is more important than anything else, the protection of our citizens," said Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis.
County commissioners will meet again Friday and may discuss the issue further.
