SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah Affiliate for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network received the Affiliate of the Year award.

The award was presented on March 26 by Patrick Swayze's widow Lisa Swayze and Julie Fleshman, CEO, of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at the organization's community outreach leadership training in Dallas.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., according to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

The Savannah Affiliate started in 2007 and has grown six-fold this year, from 5 to 30 active volunteers.  It has combined the PurpleStride 5K walk and PurpleLight candlelight vigil events and raised $40,000.

Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival among leading cancer killers, according to the network. Patrick Swayze, Carnegie Mellon University Professor Dr. Randy Pausch, actor Michael Landon, opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti are among those celebrities who have died from the cancer.
