Jurors find Walterboro woman guilty of child abuse

WALTERBORO, SC (WTOC) -

A Walterboro woman was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison for abusing her two children and allowing a babysitter to abuse the children.

One of the children, a 2-year-old girl, nearly died as a result of abuse and neglect.

Jurors found Stanqwanner Wiggins, 25, guilty of two counts of unlawful neglect of a child and two counts of a parent allowing another person to inflict great bodily injury to a child.

Medics were called to the babysitter Sheree Washington's home on June 16, 2010, at Fourth Street in Walterboro because the girl was no longer breathing. The girl was revived, but medical personnel noticed numerous injuries in various stages of healing and contacted the Colleton County Sheriff's Office to launch an investigation, according to the Fourteenth Circuit Solicitor's Office.

Doctors found the young girl had a lacerated liver, two fractured arms, bruises to her scalp and burns all over her body, including second-degree burns on her back. Her 3-year-old brother had a broken collarbone, open sores on his face and scarring that was consistent with being beaten with an electrical cord or clothes hanger.

The S.C. Department of Social Services took custody of Wiggins' children.

The case against Washington is still pending.
