SC chess team wins state championship

LADY'S ISLAND, GA (WTOC) - Beaufort Academy's Chess Team had quite a year. The team, made up of kindergarteners, first graders, second graders and one fifth grader recently won the South Carolina state championship. They are the youngest team to win the competition.

Coach Darrin Rogers started the team three years and says it's really taken off.

"We got in first place and we felt good about it," said Kindergartener Jack McDougal.

"I told some of the parents I saw the light bulbs come on with these kids. They went from just moving pieces to setting up traps," said Coach Rogers.

The kindergarten players also went to the nationals in Florida and placed fourth in the nation for their grade.
