Fare Discussed for Downtown CAT Shuttle

The Chatham Area Transit's free downtown trolley may not be free much longer. CAT officials are looking at making riders pay to board the trolleys. The service has been subsidized by the City of Savannah since 1999, but CAT says funding and ridership are both down. Some officials say charging passengers even as little as a quarter could make a difference.

"It will just help offset what taxpayers here in Chatham County pay," said CAT board member Dean Kicklighter. "I believe asking a quarter from the tourists is not asking too much."

Savannah city officials say they want to discuss other options before charging passengers. CAT even suggested the city might want to take over the trolley service. It's used by visitors as well as downtown residents and workers.
