Council member speaks out against recent altercation

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - A Hilton Head Council member who reportedly went into a tirade against another member finally spoke out about his actions Monday.

Bill Ferguson said he wasn't the first to get in a fight.

"We've had other council members that have stormed out of meetings, that have yelled, and used profanity against other people at council meetings. But they never, ever thought about any type of recrimination against those people. Why? because they're not African American," said Ferguson.

Ferguson reportedly called Councilman George Williams a bigot and grabbed his shirt collar before the town manager stepped in.

The dispute arose over heirs property the town is purchasing that would evict 23 native islander families from their homes.
