Coastal Watch 2011 is a full scale exercide in Beaufort County. It's designed to test emergency response during a national disaster. National Guard units from the Carolinas, Tennessee, Alabama came down to test their mettle and help local emergency officials be prepared for the worst.
"What we're training for now helps us in the future. In a real-world scenario we never have to go through this, live so to speak. But training for this helps us, through the coordination efforts, in the event that a catastrophe happened, whether it were man made or natural disaster," said Chuck Runnion with Beaufort Co. Emergency Management.
The exercise is designed to stimulate a catastrophe with massive fatalities, injuries, damage and destruction. The training will take place again on Wednesday at the Jasper County Airport.
