TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) - The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Charleston is scheduled to conduct an oil spill training response drill Thursday at Lazaretto Creek near Tybee Island.
Boat crews from Coast Guard Station Tybee Island and the Coast Guard Auxiliary will work with Moran Environmental personnel to deploy oil containment boom to practice shoreline protection strategies and mitigation techniques, according to the Coast Guard. It is expected to last for four hours.
The oil containment boom practice is part of an yearly training program aimed at better preparing Coast Guard personnel for a real oil-spill event.
Waterway users are asked to report all spills, sheens, and hazardous material releases into the waterways to the National Response Center at 800.424.8802.
