Push made for Fort Stewart as new combat brigade

HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) - Three U.S. Georgia lawmakers are pressing the army to make Fort Stewart the new home of a combat brigade.

U.S. Sens. Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss, along with U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston all signed a letter to the army secretary saying that Fort Stewart is practically ready for an influx of about 4,000 new troops.

Fort Stewart and Liberty County spent millions of dollars on new housing, schools and other improvements a few years ago after the army announced it would locate a new brigade there. Those plans were scrapped in 2009 despite the hefty investment.

The pentagon plans to move a brigade from Germany back to the U.S. in 2015.
