The 2011 Special Olympic Summer Games are under way in Savannah. Nearly 400 athletes from Chatham, Effingham, Liberty and Long County schools were at Savannah Country Day School showing off their skills at the annual track and field competition.
"We provide these athletes with a place to compete and also get to meet other athletes from other places around the state," said Stephen Sparks, GA Special Olympics. "A lot of times in our own communities they don't have stuff they can do. This is specifically designed for them so they a place to go and compete with people just like them."
Some of the athletes will move on to compete in the state Special Olympics in May. WTOC's morning anchor Mike Cihla was the emcee for the opening ceremonies.
