COLUMBIA, SC (WTOC) - The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control recommended Tuesday that Beaufort County residents should limit time spent outdoors due to multiple prescribed fires that are expected in the next few days.
Smoke from the fires has been noticeable in parts of Beaufort County. The smoke is a mixture of gases and fine particles from burning trees and other plant materials. It can hurt your eyes, irritate your respiratory system, and worsen chronic heart and lung diseases, according to the DHEC.
- DHEC recommends these tips:
- Stay inside to avoid the smoke.
- Keep windows and doors closed.
- Run an air conditioner and keep the fresh-air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent outdoor smoke from getting inside.
