BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

A Bluffton police cruiser was hit by a passing vehicle during a traffic stop early Friday morning.

Police said that at 1 a.m. Friday, a police cruiser was hit as Sgt. Joe George was conducting a traffic stop on US Highway 278 near Rose Hill Plantation.

George opened door to get out of his vehicle when a Honda Accord driven by George Henry Rowan, of Hilton Head Island, ran into the side of the patrol vehicle, according to police.

The Honda hit the open door, bending it forward and damaging Rowan's vehicle as well as the police car. No one was injured.

South Carolina Highway Patrol cited Rowan for failing to move over for emergency vehicle, which is a violation of the "Move Over" law.

The law requires drivers to move over into an adjacent lane whenever possible and slow down when there are emergency vehicles with flashing lights, rescue equipment, or emergency personnel along the roadways, according to police.
