HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - The cannon was shot during the ceremonial opening tee shot at the Heritage Classic Monday. Defending champion Jim Furyk hit the shot into Calibogue Sound Monday morning.
He also received the Tartan jacket and trophy he earned by winning last year's Heritage.
This year the tournament will be played under a cloud of uncertainty. It does not have a title sponsor and will need one to remain on the PGA tour.
Heritage officials will be entertaining potential sponsors this week and they believe tournament week is their best advertisement.
"That's the thing about it, we're going to have a great tournament. I can't predict what's going to happen in '12, I can't necessarily predict what's going to happen at the end of the week. But we're going to have a great week," said Steve Wilmot, Heritage Tournament Director.
The tournament is being run this year on money from The Heritage Classic Foundation's reserve fund as well as $1 million each from the city of Hilton Head and Beaufort County.
