Mayoral candidates to speak at fair housing event

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Savannah-Chatham County Fair Housing Council will hold its 15th annual Fair Housing Banquet & Awards Ceremony on April 22.

It will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the EOA Administration Building at 1120 May St.

Each of the Savannah Mayoral candidates have been invited to share their perspective on fair housing. The speaker for this year's event will be a returning guest, civil rights legend and noted photographer Bernard J. Kleina.

"Our theme this year - Fair housing. It's not an option. It's the Law! reflects that we continue the fight for equality 43 years since President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Federal Housing Act into law. We invite everyone to join us at the event to celebrate some of our successes," said Planning Committee Chair James Jones in a statement.

The winner of the 2011 William K. Broker Good Citizen Award, which is given to a citizen who has made exemplary efforts to further fair housing, will be announced.

The winner of the 2011 Fair Housing Poster Contest will also be announced at the event. The winner will receive a computer donated by the Savannah Board of Realtors.

The event costs $25 per person. Pre-registration is preferred.
