1 dead after truck crashes into apartment building

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - One person is dead and several people are temporarily out of a home, after a dump truck crashed into an apartment building just after 11 a.m. Thursday on White Bluff Road near Holland Drive.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Officer Gena Moore told WTOC, that the unidentified driver was pronounced dead on the scene after Savannah Fire and Emergency Services and EMS tried to free him from the trapped truck.

Everyone who was in the apartment building at the time was evacuated. At this time, no one is allowed back into the building until engineers can determine if the building is safe.

At 1 p.m., the truck was still lodged in the first floor of the building.

Witnesses at the scene said they heard the boom and saw dirt flying in the air and ran to see what happened and if they could help.

WTOC has learned the dump truck was hauling dirt to intended for the Truman Parkway extension project.

Chatham Emergency Management is also at the scene cleaning up diesel fuel leaking from the dump truck.

One lane of traffic is open in both directions at White Bluff Road at Holland Drive.
