The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that happened outside a Hilton Head pawn shop Monday morning.
Sheriff's deputies arrived at about 11:30 a.m at the Top Dollar Pawn at 11 Mathews Dr. on a report of a shooting in the parking lot.
Deputies found a 63-year old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to Hilton Head Medical Center, where he later died.
Witnessnes told deputies that the victim went to Top Dollar Pawn to discuss the sale of a 9 mm handgun. After brokering the deal, the victim went out to his vehicle in the parking lot to retrieve the weapon, according to the sheriff's office.
Witnesses said they heard a single shot and the victim cry out. The victim was found at the rear of the vehicle and had been shot in the chest. The handgun was found in the vehicle's open trunk.
At this time, there is no indication of foul play, as it appears that the victim may have accidentally discharged the gun while attempting to unload it, according to the sheriff's office.
An investigation continues into the shooting.
