SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - An estimated 275 students will receive their undergraduate and graduate degrees May 7 at Savannah State University's 178th commencement ceremony.

The ceremony takes place at 10 a.m. May 7 at Tiger Arena.

Rear Adm. Nevin P. Carr Jr., chief of Naval Research and director of Test and Evaluation and Technology Requirements for the U.S. Navy, will be the guest speaker.

Carr's shipboard tours included USS King; USS McCandless; USS Thomas S. Gates; USS Vella Gulf; Cruiser/Destroyer Group 8 staff embarked in USS Dwight D. Eisenhower; and the 2nd Fleet staff embarked in USS Mt. Whitney, according to SSU. He commanded USS Arleigh Burke and USS Cape St. George, winning Battle Efficiency Awards and Golden Anchors in both tours.

While in command of Cape St. George, the ship participated in combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in both the European and Central Command theaters, according to SSU.
