SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Are you excited? Thousands of people are. The Rock N' Roll Marathon has people stoked! Oh yeah, I am. In fact, all of us are here at WTOC. We are now the official media sponsor of this very unique and exciting marathon. Since I caught the fever, like so many others, have been wondering just where this race would take us. Tuesday, we got some answers and a challenge for everyone else who has not signed up yet.
Just imagine a crowd of 15,000 runners racing right through the streets of Savannah. This is what organizers say will happen on November 5th when the Rock N' Roll Marathon makes its way to town."I don't think the population of Savannah has any idea what is coming. I said to the mayor recently we are never going to have a super bowl. We are never going to have a world series, but this is going to be the biggest sports event that ever hit our city. What really makes it terrific is everybody can be a part of it," says Joe Marinelli, president of Visit Savannah.
Hundreds joined in the kick off block party at Fleet Feet Sports Savannah. Live music, food, fun and discounts set the scene for the big reveal. During the celebration Robert Espinoza, owner of Fleet Feet Sports Savannah unveiled the route. This race will take us all around the city. We will begin in front of city hall on Bay at Bull Street. Then we will run through the heart of downtown to west Savannah then all the way to the Gordonston neighborhood on the eastside. Runners doing the full marathon will get right on the Truman Parkway then south to Nottingham Woods back on to Derenne before we cross the finish line in Forsyth Park. Wanna join us? It's not too late.
"You can do it! All 15,000 people who will be doing the half marathon will not be running the whole thing. They will be running and walking a combination of both," explains Espinoza with the enthusiasm of young child. Now you know why I am so excited. He has a way about him that makes you feel like you can do anything.
Even if you have never run before, the official trainer for the marathon, Fleet Feet Sports Savannah, can get you in tip top shape with boot camp. "It is really amazing that in 12 weeks we have seen people like you go from not being able to run to running a 5K. Now they know they can do it. If you can run 3 miles or run/ walk 3 miles by the end of May, you can be ready in time to do the half marathon. The official training starts May 28th and we will be running three times per week. We are focusing mainly on running from May to November. It is all running," explains Lydia DePue, certified trainer with Fleet Feet Sports.
Robert Espinoza hopes this marathon will be the beginning of a whole new way of life for all of us. "I don't see the one year Rock N' Roll Marathon or five years Rock N' Roll Marathon as the end game. The end game is to make Savannah more fit- make Savannah continue to move."
