Traffic along South Carolina Highway 170 won't be getting better any time soon. The highway widening project is behind schedule. The South Carolina Department of Transportation is widening 12 miles of State Route 170 and building two new bridges over the Broad River and the Chechessee River. The whole thing was supposed to be finished by November, but only the bridges will be completed.
"We've got to get the roadway approaches complete," SCDOT engineer David Glenn said. "With the rainy conditions, we've got quite a bit of work to get them over here, so I don't see traffic over here in October."
If the contractor doesn't make the deadline, they'll have to pay $8,000 a day until the work is done.
